The term Yoga has been derived from the sanskrit verb root “YUJ” which, means to bind, join and attach. So, generally the word Yoga means “Union”.
According to Maharishi Patanjali’s definition of yoga is “yogas chitta vritti nirodhah”, which means “yoga is the removal of the fluctuations of the mind”. Chitta is mind, vrittis are thought impulses, nirodah is removal.
According to Bhagavad Gita, Yoga is the state of Balance or equanimity in which a person remains unaffected by different situations such as success and failure, raga and dveshas in life.
Patanjali was the first to write down the teachings of Yoga in the “Yoga Sutra“. Each sutras says in some ways what yoga is and how to attain that divide state.
